Arctodus simus by Dantheman9758 Arctodus simus by Dantheman9758
Claimed to be the "largest bear ever", Arctodus simus stood 5'6 inches tall at the shoulder, and could look a 6' man square in the eye standing on all four limbs. It was not built like a typical modern day bear, because it had long thin legs, and it lacked the pigeon toed stance of modern bears, this made it an adept runner. Its teeth suggest that it's diet was more carnivorous than most bears, and its jaws were very short, wide and powerful, giving it the nickname "bulldog bear".

It lived in North America during the Pleistocene, and went extinct only 12,000 years ago... which means the first Americans DID encounter this animal.

Mr. Daniel Reed, do you do any commisioning for books? Any books have your art? Because I'd buy it in an instant

I haven't really had anything published or commisioned for books. I was making these renderings as a hobby about 2-3 years ago. I've had since stopped for various reasons but I'm seeing a lot of positive feedback now that I'm dusting the cobwebs off of this website. I wish I could quit my day job and do this to make a living, but in "hobby" form it doesn't pay any bills and consumes a lot of time haha. This image was published in an Italian science magazine at about the time you commented. I'll see if I can dig up the title, maybe it exists in an online PDF form... either way it'd be in Italian so I'm not sure how much can be read haha
