Artist's Comments

Okay, I decided I need some major critiquing on the head before I go ahead and continue working on the body...

I also must add that I'm not even sure the skull that I'm working with, is a fully modern or accurate assembly of the skull... Almost ALL recent deinonychus reconstructions that I've seen have a face that is NOT shaped like the one I'm making and I'm wondering if I'm using some really out dated skull....

Okay here are a few things I need some help with...(feel free to comment on anything u wish though)

1. How much beak should there be? I've seen some renderings with a huge beak covering the whole front of the face. I chose to put the main "beak" right over top of the distinct grooves that run up the front and on the tip of the skull, and the rest of the face is a sort of tough, primitive beak-like skin. I see no grooves on the bottom jaw so I didn't continue the main beak there, was that a mistake?, everybody seems to put a beak both top and bottom. Also, if the tough beak-like skin is way to inaccurate or stupid of an idea than I will cover it up with something more accurate.

2. Lacrimal horns; how do you determine how large to make them and where to position them? and what are they made out of (bone/cartilage)? because I can't find any good sources on deinonychus larcrimal horns. I simply connected them to the "beak" but I don't know if I should have done that.

3. Feathery snout; how much should be feathered? I had a comment on my full body WIP that the snout needs much more feathers, i kinda think it looks cool without them but If I must put feathers on than I will (which would also remove the thick beak-like skin).

************MAJOR EDIT****************

Okay with my newest Edit, I gave the Deinonychus a "bird of prey" eagle eyeball, the previous eye was from a rhea. (Does it look better or worse?, and should it be bigger? I JUST noticed after uploading this pic, that a larger eye could fit within the skulls proportions)

All of the skull proportions are now attempting to match the proportions of the "latest" Greg S. Paul skull assembly, which Is FAR longer and more narrow than I'm used to seeing, this animal truly does look like a long faced bird!.

The teeth I tried to get to look more realistic, they still need refining.

I added a new layer of display feathers on the back of the head/neck, and they also need refining work to blend better with the head.

Also, at the bottom you can now see previous phases of my deinonychus reconstructions (phase 2 is what I had previously posted prior to this update). My first reconstruction shows how poorly I understood dinosaur anatomy (this is still my first dinosaur reconstruction, and If i can get this done with with good accuracy than it won't be my last). I've been reading up on bird anatomy to better understand how dinosaur claws eventually evolved into wings so that should help me when I go back to making the body of this animal.

Overall, I rushed these proportions and I lost a ton of texture quality because of it, but I wanted to show people what I'm working with now, so they didn't keep critiquing my old reconstruction.... So for now I will be working on these proportions, only I will being trying to do them without loss in texture quality.

Awesome! The teeth... that's the only thing bothering me, and the blured green background.
:icondantheman9758:
The backround is only there because I didn't feel like using a solid backdrop, and its blurred because I want people to look at the face not the pretty jungle picture behind it, this is just a WIP for critiquing, not a complete composition, if you think the image would be more clear for critiques without it I can switch it with a solid color.

And could you elaborate on the teeth?, like, do they look fake? are they not the right shape or angle? are there too many or too few of them?
:icondustdevil:
The teeth look a bit fake, exactly. Maybe they're too white compared to the high level of details and textures of the other part of the head.
And about the green background, it's just personal taste you know.

I really like the way you choosed to hide the lines of the skull. That's the key to give a true living rendition. Not only a skull mapping. I often says as example that a varanus skull is full of cavities, and they're not visible on the living animal.
Anyway, can't wait to see more!
:iconmattmart:
Looks great so far! As to the extent of feathers on the snout, Sinornithosaurus would be a good guide. The Dave fossil ([link]) shows pretty clearly where the feathers ended, at least on the upper part of the snout.
:icondantheman9758:
Wow, what an amazing fossil, I've been trying to locate a good detailed picture of a feathered dinosaur, thanks for the link!
:icondantheman9758:
Teeth will be fixed soon than! blurred background will probably stay ;) haha

I actually had a few preliminary versions where the skull outlines were closely followed but they just didn't look right with the textures I was using. So I just didn't see the need for it because I was already aware of what you pointed out, modern animals don't have skulls were the tissue follows each dent, contour, and cavity, so I stuck with the smooth looking face that it has now.

didnt greggy paul make a brand new hyper-updated deinonychus skull not too long ago?

you should ask around for it,
the thing is
as usual,
theres no complete deinonychus skull around, and the overall shape of the skull has gone back and forth from a more "carnosaurid" boxy shape, to a very smooth velociraptor shape.

i think the "final" skull came out pretty similar to the skull you are using, only a tad bit more elongated, and a less pointy snout,
it would be best if you could find either greg's skull restoration. with that much work and realism to it, its a pity to use outdated reference material

Excellent, I was wondering if somebody would give me some advice on the skull, I've seen 2 COMPLETELY different looking ones so far, so it really bothers me knowing that the one I'm using may or may not be the right one. (The one I'm using is from wikipedia, which is currently moderated by a team who is very picky about what is displayed, so I'm hoping the one I'm using isn't to far out of date, that way I can just "slightly" modify it if there is a newer one)...

I will hunt this new hyper-updated skull reconstruction now!

This is gonna be one kickass deinonychus If I keep getting this much help!
:iconzegh8578:
i tried to find it, and couldnt, thought it would suck to get a hard-to-find dangling in front of you, and not actually find it, so

i just seriously challenged my own lazyness there :I
