Hi Dantheman.

I have some doubts about the rights of this process. I would like to communicate directly with you via email. Do you think you can send me an address?

So the head-body length is about 6 feet, is it, for S. fatalis? Is that the head-body length in an African lion as well?

Wow... They're a beautiful creature . Too bad that they're extinct :-( I would love to see them running around in the wild :-)

Thank you for the critique :) I agree. Check out my newer renderings, they've improved over time - let me know what you think of them as well!

i still think the tail and the collor should be changed alittle
it still looks too much like a lynx i think?

but i am not an expert either, atleast it looks better at the newer one

In your own vision what colors would make up a Smilodon that is less lynx-like? More orange and red? More grays and browns? I'll entertain this critique with a little bit of direction because color corrections are easy enough to accomplish. There is no expert consensus on Smilodon fur, but the best interpretations follow patterns in nature. Grays/Browns are northern climate shades, reds and yellows are southern. Also, ambush felines need a good pattern/color to break up their figure in appropriate surroundings - and cats have a bias towards spotting and spot mutations. In Smilodon's case, it had a territory that spanned both a warm or cold climate, and it was a predator that favored ambush hunting in open woodlands. Also just to be sure we are talking about the same image you have seen the newest ones correct? [link] Give me some insight on how a Smilodon's tail would look as well

i think more orange and red indeed and i think his tail will be a bit slimmer at the end and a bit broader at the start, but on that i could be wrong

Nice manipulation :D I was looking at it, saying to myself, "Bobcat, clouded leopard maybe, lynx, cheetah, bobcat, lynx, and I have no idea." That last part was for the front of the head. Maybe something wolfish. I think i know the cats better XD It was really funny for me, though, because I never knew I could recognize different parts of each animal XD

ahh, well ur very close! The body is 90 percent bobcat, maybe with a lynx tail i can't remember. The neck is from a snow leopard, and the head is all from a canada lynx, with chunks placed over top of the shape of a lions head (but the lions head was shaped over top of a Smilodon bone structure and another artists reconstruction!)... and of course i change all the colors and added my own spots and stripes here and there to complete the picture!

haha! Im going to reference this for my comic. I dont think i have been drawing the hind quarters small enough or the teeth curved enough. Im so inaccurate!! :(
Oh well, it IS talking wolves after all lol! :D

I used the BBC smilodon populator reconstruction as my main reference (those guys know theyre stuff). Although i scaled it accordingly to match the smilodon fatalis in dimensions, as well as give it a more northerly ice-age layer of fur/fat... think of it like "siberianizing" a bengal tiger... haha

That just means the comic will keep getting better and better. Eventually the style and design will even out, 1st parts of anything are always the roughest. Also, we can do whatever we want, it's our project! They could be blue and pink if we wanted to, lol!

Nice "lynx-like" touch. Great job!
Oh, btw, there's a bit "dirt" behind the ears of the Smilodon, maybe you forgot to erase that.

Not so good eye, I guess... I thought you used European lynx for the cheek hair.
Btw, it seems you insinuate a bit some hair in the ears resembling the "pencils" typical in lynxes. If I'm correct and you want to give it that fact, what's the reason?

Aesthetic appeal... thats about it haha, just trying to make this a not-so-typical smilodon rendition

I don't think theres any evidence for it, or even any speculation, unless machairodontid cats shared some sort of ancestry with the modern short-tailed felines like lynxes, bobcats, and caracals
